Three Holistic Treatments For Depression

Posted on: 5 April 2016

If you're in treatment for depression but are still feeling rather blue, then perhaps it is time to add some holistic depression treatment tactics to your routine. Holistic medicine focuses on healing the body as a whole, and this approach is very useful when it comes to treating depression -- an ailment that affects not only your mind, but also the function of your other organs and organ systems. Here's a look at three holistic treatments that may help ease your symptoms.

Exercise

Exercise is not just good for your muscles; it's good for your mind. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are hormones that act in the brain to elevate your mood and boost positive thinking. You don't have to become a champion boxer or run marathons to take advantage of the healing powers of exercise. Adding a 20-minute walk or jog to your daily routine or attending yoga classes a few times per week is a great start. As your fitness improves, you'll also start feeling better about yourself, and that will only help to boost your mood even further.

Clean Up Your Diet

If you're eating a diet high in sugar and processed foods, then no wonder you're feeling depressed. It's hard to stay positive when you are dealing with energy bursts and plunges due to a high sugar intake. Plus, when your cells don't have the nutrients they need, you get sick more often, feel lethargic, and develop more aches and pains -- and none of those things help boost your mood. For most people, a diet that focuses on whole grains, natural fruits and vegetables, and lean meats is excellent for promoting overall health, including relief from depression. You don't have to avoid treats entirely, but make them something you enjoy once or twice a week -- not five times a day.

Getting Better Sleep

There's a difference between getting enough sleep and getting good sleep. You can spend 10 hours in bed every night and still get poor quality sleep, and this is not great for your depression symptoms or your overall health. Take these steps to enhance the quality of your sleep:

  • Go to bed at the same time every night so that your body gets into a routine and you have an easier time falling asleep.
  • Keep your room dark and cool. Most people sleep best under these conditions.
  • Avoid staring at phone or computer screens for at least an hour before bed.

By improving your diet, getting more exercise, and improving the quality of your sleep, you can enhance the health of your whole body and thereby alleviate a lot of your depression symptoms. Contact a health professional like Dr Jeff Phillips to learn more.
